#WeirdShitWednesday: Butter in my coffee.

Yes I realize I have posted about this before. If you missed it, the rumors are true, I put butter AND coconut oil in my morning coffee. It’s amazing. It’s delightful. It’s fulfilling. It’s weird, to you, but to me it is just any other morning with my vitamix.

#fatmakesyouPHAT

I stole this hashtag from my beez January of www.januarywellness.com, and she is the one who changed my mind and my heart in the world of fat and cholesterol. Shameless self promotion here, the two of us are collaborating on a workout/eating/love yourself plan realllll quick here so stay tuned if you really want the FULL story as to know why I eat butter in my coffee. Because I can’t really break it all down in one post.

BUTTer try though.

Modified Intermittent Fasting and Nutritional Ketosis

So, I sometimes do a version of intermittent fasting and nutritional ketosis where I do not shove anything in my mouth from about 8pm – 12pm so a good 16 hours of fasting. WITH the exception of bulletproof coffee (recipe will be below the post). I also aim to fuel my body with good fats, proteins and greens and probably stay under 25 grams of carbs a day to get my body into nutritional ketosis. (Nerdy science read here.)

The fat from my morning bulletproof coffee makes my body stay in ketosis so my cells and metabolism get the benefits of Intermittent Fasting, but the fats provide enough fuel for my brain as to not send my hormones into wacky mode, or to trick my body into thinking I am starving, thus starting to store fat. I have a tremendous amount of energy and I know my cells are cleaning up house WITHOUT compromising the function of my hormones, and I know without a doubt this has helped me to shed some serious baby weight.  I need to do an entire post on this but read more about IF here from Fitnessista.

I pee on sticks to see if my body is in ketosis from time to time…

(Note – A LOT of folk out there advise women against IF because of the harm it can potentially cause their hormones. I have not seen the research to support this warning, however I do feel the physical need for some fat int the morning instead of just hard core no calories, but to each their own, you have to listen to your OWN body and do your OWN research.)

Butter is real food. Sugar is the devil.

This is a long story. One in which most people have a very, very emotional attachment to. For a very long time we have been told to eat a low fat, high carb, whole grain, five servings of fruit and veggies, and as much sugar free crap thrown on top diet. However, in my body too many carbs = too much fat on my hips. Little carbs = MORE energy and MORE visible abs.

However, my butter is GOOD butter. We are talking raw if possible, but GRASS-FED or pasture raised most definitely, and I love Kerrygold, available at Trader Joes, Costco and Sprouts.

MORE on my butter obsession soon, however the cliff notes go like this.

Fat is actually ESSENTIAL for the optimal thriving and survival of ALL of our cells. Your body cannot utilize THAT many grams of carbohydrates and the rest are stored as fat, wreak havoc on your blood stream and cause a ton of inflammation, AND grains in my opinion were not meant to be digested by our bodies so they really eff us up.

THESE are entirely my own opinions and what has worked for me personally. I shared to shed light, not to tell you your way of eating is wrong. EveryBODY is different, my body just prefers to be dipped in butter.

Some research on why you should eat fat. NOT enough but some:

Saturated fat is not associated with cardiovascular disease.  (1) (2) (3)

Saturated fat does not raise cholesterol levels over time. (4)

Saturated fat raises HDL cholesterol, lowers triglycerides, and decreases the oxidation of cholesterol. (56)

A diet high in saturated fat improves blood vessel function. (78)
